Growing up in a military family, Michaela Anne lived as a modern day gypsy - traveling the American terrain as well as abroad. Always active musically,
she picked up influences as diverse as the places she lived. Now planted firmly in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, a neighborhood with an imagined taste of
country life within the metropolis of New York City, she has found a home, and band. Her songs weave stories of the hardships and pleasures in life,
notably influenced by the American military family lifestyle. Blending country, blues and folk with heartfelt lyrics and a powerful vocal delivery,
Michaela Anne evokes the ever-changing landscape of American life she witnessed firsthand.
Michaela's debut album To Know Where, recorded by Jesse Lauter (The Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins), Diko Shoturma and Scott Kettner was self-released on April 5th, 2011. To Know Where is a compilation of original songs inspired by her upbringing as a nomadic child of the U.S. Military. The album features accomplished New York-based musicians with an exemplary guitar and vocal performance by Bluegrass guitar maven Michael Daves (Steve Martin, Chris Thile, Rosanne Cash) on Taken Away and harmony vocals by Willie Nelson's Farm Aid regular Jesse Lenat on the title track To Know Where to name a few. To Know Where has already been garnering positive attention with recognition from Telluride Bluegrass Festival's 2011 Troubadour Contest as an honorable mention for songwriting and gaining traction in the Americana radio format. The Record describes it as "Nine songs with uncommon clarity, vision and execution for someone just beginning her career....This is an album that never overstays it's welcome" and Common Folk Music describes the collection as "soul-searching songs that have a way of touching the spirit....emotional and angelic vocal delivery".
(PICTURED)
From rock to jazz to world music to folk and back to rock, the trajectory of Brooklyn based Tall Tall Trees has come full circle, or more precisely, full moon.
On the night of a lunar eclipse in December 2010, the band began recording its second album in a church nestled in the sticks of Woodstock, NY, emerging two weeks later with an album that marked a significant evolution in their electric banjo-driven sound. The result, m()ment, is a departure from the quirky bounce of their self-titled debut and a journey into deeper and darker waters as multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Mike Savino explores more serious and personal matters in this set of lyrically driven songs. Produced by Savino, along with guitarist and keyboardist Kyle Sanna, bassist Benjamin Campbell, and percussionist Mathias Kunzli, the album is a snapshot of a band in peak creative form, crafting album as art in a one-off mp3 world.

song-cycle by Girls in Trouble, to be released May 17th on JDub Records. With Girls in Trouble, Brooklyn poet and multi-instrumentalist Alicia Jo
Rabins mines dark stories of Biblical women, exploring the hidden places where their complicated lives overlap with her own. The result is an album of

PLUS LIVE INTERACTIVE COMIC SLIDESHOW BY
Euro+Trash: Kafka, Comics and Collisions of Culture
In an interactive comics slide show,Forward Artist in Residence Eli Valley shares the inspiration for much of his work: a romanticization of pre-war European Jewish culture as embodied in the fantasies of Franz Kafka and as experienced during his years living in Prague. Eli will provide commentary on several Of his comics in light of those idealized eras: the absurdist hallucinations, the wellsprings of noir, and the recurring urge to capture an authentic Jewish cultural tradition.
Great Lakes began in Athens, Georgia in 1996, released an eponymous debut in 2000, and relocated to Brooklyn in 2002. The Distance Between appeared that year, and with 2006 came the release of Diamond Times. A new record, Ways of Escape, came out in October of 2010.
Over the years Great Lakes' sound has gradually moved away from the psychedelia of their debut, and toward more folk and country influences. With Ben Crum on guitar and vocals, the new record features Kevin Shea (drums), David Lerner (bass), Jay Israelson (piano), Phillip Sterk (pedal steel), Joe McGinty (electric piano and organ), Jon Natchez (bass clarinet and baritone sax), Heather McIntosh (cello), and Suzanne Nienaber (backing vocals). (Pictured / Austin, TX)
When the band Frank Smith collectively pulled up their Boston stakes and landed in Austin back in 2007, the group fit right in. Their first local release, Heavy Handed Peace And Love, boasted a number of Texas sensibilities: loping rhythms, pedal steel guitar, and the twangy voice of lead singer Aaron Sinclair-in other words, not bad for Northeastern transplants. But since then, the group has looked to break out of that easy fit, and each subsequent record has remade the Frank Smith formula. They've hit a sweet spot with the upcoming release of their eighth album, Before You Were Born.
Part of the band's chameleon-like nature is due to its shifting lineup. While Sinclair has remained as the central constant, other members come and go, prompting new ideas based on new musical sensibilities. Even from the start, though, Sinclair's folksier leanings were balanced by muscular rock arrangements, like on the title track from 2010's Nineteen. Harmonicas and textured guitars can live side-by-side in the Frank Smith universe.
But Before You Were Born is a different animal all together. Those rustic touches are largely submerged in favor of a bigger sound that suits the band well.

Bright Brown is sonic cinema. Bittersweet layers and textures abound, and beautifully crafted songs exist at the core. Alex Nahas' songwriting boldly chooses to sit "between the meager and the mundane" elevating the everyday."... brilliant songs, full of pathos and alienation, but sweetened with strong doses of optimism...Sometimes painfully spare, and sometimes lush and clamorous, these are masterfully produced tracks - dynamic, engaging and full of heart." - Stick.com
Since the immediate chemistry of their chance meeting on the New York City Subway a few years ago, Alex Nahas and Nick Smeraski have released two critically acclaimed records, the intimate and moody "No Matter How Faint There's Light In Everything" and the more epic and celebratory "Oceans", while wowing audiences with explosive duo performances. Alex accompanies his darkly optimistic vocals on The Chapman Stick, a seldom seen ten-stringed electric instrument covering a sonic range from deep, earthy bass to shimmering highs, while Nick Smeraski drums viscerally textural pulses that choose moments to lash out in restrained violence.
"...ideal soundtrack to the crisp, autumn air. ...Sounds range from sparse and repetitive like a piece for avant-garde dance to expansive and melodic like the theme from a western where everyone dies in the same pool of blood...Fans of Brian Eno, Nick Drake, and John Cale should check these guys out." - The Deli
Alex Nahas is best known for founding the critically acclaimed post rock band, Laughingstock. Other achievements include touring and recording with John Vanderslice, and producing / engineering the first Mates of State EP.

Abdullah Saeed
and Hassan Malik do not shy away from ruffling feathers with their music.
The two comprise the band Sunny Ali and the Kid, and their laid back, some say irreverent, treatment of topics -from women who wear head coverings to the heroin problem in Pakistan - has provoked some negative response from Muslims.
Saeed and Malik were born in the U.S. to Pakistani parents and have been influenced by the punk Islam movement, Taqwacore, based on a movie that depicts a number of Muslim 20-somethings living in one house, experimenting with drugs, skateboarding and punk music.
Hassan Malik told Here & Now's Robin Young that they don't want to encourage young people to drink or use drugs, they believe punk is about being honest and open.
"Punk is just being brutally honest to yourself and to the world," Malik said, referencing the Taqwacore punk Islam movement. "[Even] if that means you want to get tatoos and skate… it's just the home for the Muslims that most traditional Muslims won't accept."

"LA's young The Driftwood Singers' folk tinged harmonies are channeling another time and place." - Huffington Post
Constantly on the road since beginning the band nearly two years ago at the age of 19, playing all over the country and Canada, The Driftwood Singers
are quite a surprising contrast to what one might expect from two kids born and raised in the heart of Los Angeles. They prove that one can love the
Carter Family and traditional music and still be firmly in the present with songs as vibrant and alive as any we've heard and an attitude that embraces
the anti-elitist and DIY ethos of the punks we love
Their debut, 5-song EP, Look! beautifully exemplifies their determination. After experimenting with some big studios and becoming frustrated with the
intervals of multi-tracking and the stale output of Protools, they decided one night to pare everything down to its stark essence and begin recording
it on a Sony Walkman which they did by laying it on their living room table and pressing record. What's captured is the immediacy of their performances
and what they call "the transparency of sound".
How can you go wrong with songs of death and hope, murder and love, lechery and splendor, transcendence and cruelty and all points in between! We're
looking forward to being a part The Driftwood Singers story as it winds it's way through the hills, hollers, canyons and caves out of the shadows of
the blue ridge mountains of Pocahontas, West Virginia to wide open starlit skies of Joshua Tree, California.

Boston's Fatal Flaw formed in early 2008 when Joel Reader, California native and pop-punk veteran, suddenly found himself bandless in the numbing cold
of a Boston winter. Not one to mill about aimlessly, Reader quickly assembled a veritable who's-who of Northeast rockers. The new act featured Reader
on bass and lead vocals, Glen Fant and Aaron Spransy on guitars, backed by Randy Tartow on drums.
The new bandmates immediately began to write collaboratively, creating melodies in line with Reader's traditional pop sensibility while infusing the songs with the beautiful Northeast pessimism to which he had quickly acclimated. Through compositions that question religion, the traditional work-a-day lifestyle, faith and love, the band creates a brilliant, biting new spin on traditional power-pop and rock music.

The song bonded them instantly, a moonlit rush of blood and fascination. After it ended, she turned to meet him.
The next morning she brought her guitar to his room and that weekend they declared their mutual love. Two months later they recorded their first album FLIGHT, named so for their swift take off upwards. They worked passionately, devoted themselves to the development of their project, toured the East Coast for half a year and released another album, IT'S ON, five months from the first. They survived the winter of '10 in Brooklyn NYC, during which time they recorded their latest EP, TV IS DEAD. Following an epic California tour they released their smash hit single and debut music video "I'm In Love".

Aficionados of surly, grudgingly beautiful, self-loathing Midwestern rock are perhaps already acquainted with Chuck, he of the poorly named Ass
Ponys, who, for a decade or so, trudged alongside the titans of that particular genre, especially on 2001's grimly gorgeous (and excellently named)
Lohio. Back then, you wouldn't have figured his next project to play out on a Fleetwood Mac/Quasi/Richard and Linda Thompson
are-they-or-aren't-they-and-will-they-eventually-kill-each-other-regardless? battlefield of tough love and vivid unease. But in 2005, the
adequately named Wussy burst forth with "Airborne," the stupendously combative leadoff track to their debut, Funeral Dress, wherein Chuck and Lisa
sort of tunefully yell at each other, hating themselves for loving each other already. You'd have given 'em six months at best and prayed it didn't
end in homicide. But the record ended with the hesitant, rapturous ballad "Don't Leave Just Now," and they didn't, and four years and a couple more
